Hey there!
I’m James Prestage, the founder of Shades of Blackness, and I’ve always believed that true growth comes from creating something meaningful for the community.
Shades of Blackness was started with one goal in mind: to represent the beauty, strength, and diversity of black culture through unity, self-determination, collective work & responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. We’re all about growing black communities, celebrating our heritage, and giving back to the people who inspire us every day.
Growing up, there was a proverb I heard frequently “It takes a village to raise a child” our mission is to revitalize this message. I’ve always been passionate about our culture, but more than that, I’ve been driven by the desire to serve.
Through every collection, we aim to uplift and empower our community. We been involved in promoting afrocentric events and activities over the years, whether it’s mentoring young entrepreneurs, organizing food drives, or working with local organizations to provide resources to underserved communities, I’ve always felt a strong need to give back.
Public service, to me, is about standing in the gap and ensuring that everyone has access to the tools they need to thrive. We provide community support, educational courses and other resources on entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and creative expression, helping young people and adults unlock their potential and dream big.
I been where they are – full of ideas, but without the right guidance. That’s why it’s important to me that they know their dreams are valid and attainable.
At the end of the day, it’s about building a legacy that’s bigger than me. It’s about ensuring that the next generation has the resources, support, and representation they deserve.
Shades of Blackness isn’t just a brand; it’s a movement, a movement that’s about resilience, unity, and hope for a brighter future.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me.
Stay inspired, stay bold.
